New Zealand property prices are showing strong signs of stabilising according to a June snapshot of the New Zealand residential property market. Recent statistics show that the number of new property listings in the New Zealand property market declined for the fourth consecutive month indicating a marked decrease in available inventory. With New Zealand property sales volumes on the rise but stock of available properties reduced it could mean after the traditional quite winter period, the New Zealand property market could become very active in spring (September). If the downward trend in inventory continues, at some point this could lead to price pressure creeping back into some pockets of the New Zealand Property market.

New Zealand is facing a shortage in property supply according to the Bank of New Zealand’s chief economist. This is one of the key economic fundamentals which have supported the New Zealand property market throughout recent global financial turmoil. Statistics have shown a surge in turnover in the New Zealand property market since March with renewed interest from investors; and this has resulted in the stabilisation of New Zealand property prices. As accelerating population growth in New Zealand bumps up against housing construction at its lowest levels in decades, big concerns about housing affordability are going to reappear. The upside of this for New Zealand property investors is that people will be in the rental market for longer as they save to meet deposit requirements.
